Connectors are classified as consumer product for electronics, communications, high-end military applications, and other high-spending industries. China is a consumer and manufacturing giant with a large number of connectors produced and sold in the country. Currently, there are over 600 official connector and cable component manufacturers in China, of which Taiwan-invested companies that are regarded as industry leaders, account for 37.5%.  The time and development for connectors are deeply linked with the structure of an information society. Sales of connector manufacturers in Asia are steadily increasing and leading the global market.

The 2009 financial crisis hadn’t really affected the Chinese connector industry, which  showed steady growth, especially with the market entry of Taiwan. In 2011, connector manufacturers in Asia were worth 50 billion, serving industries such as automobile, telecommunications, industrial and consumer electronics, etc. There is also a great demand from the military and aviation sectors. This expansion was brought about by continuous development and innovation of connector products, which adhered to quality and technological standards. From a global perspective, connector developments fluctuate; every new technology is a challenge to connector companies. In 2011, with the steady growth of the electronics industry, excellent sales in the second half of the year drove connector production. The trend of the industry went from high to low and only companies with dynamic capabilities were able to adapt to these changes.

Although connectors are used in various fields, they are primarily associated with the growth of the electronics industry. According to current economic developments, connectors will continue to enjoy steady growth for the foreseeable future. Smartphones and tablets flooding the market will bring growth to the connector industry, most importantly the Chinese market. With rural markets opened, a huge potential market has been created. This does not only increase connector usage, but it also brings new challenges for pricing and usage environment. However, most connectors rely on foreign investment and technologies. The manufacturer only provides raw materials and labor. If Asian manufacturers truly want a piece of the high-tech industry, they will have to focus on innovation as well as research and development.

The development of connector manufacturers is a snapshot of IT development. From the development patterns of recent years, one can see innovation and directed production potential. When considering the problem of market direction, manufacturers need to improve their own production technologies, capabilities, and customized connector technology.
