Due to the financial crisis, demand from connector suppliers has declined since 2009. According to an online survey conducted by “Electronics Supply and Manufacturing-China”, the top 5 sources with the longest supply period are TE Connectivity, Omron, Panasonic, Phoenix Contact, and Molex. The current average supply cycle is 6-8 weeks for Molex alone and even up to 200 days when the material is out of stock. This definitely affects operations in the connector market and continuously weighs it down.

In order to break this phenomenon, major manufacturers have to put more effort in research and innovation to improve quality and performance, and further improve the depression  of the connector market caused by financial crisis.

As for changes in the USB2.0/3.0, speeding up the development of the USB3.0 is imperative because the 480mbps transmission speed of USB2.0 can no longer satisfy this fast-paced world.  With the USB3.0 out in the market, not only does it herald a new era of USB interface, but it also denotes the beginning of a new technology in the connector industry. The USB3.0 has a transmission speed of up to 5Gbps and has greatly improved in terms of power management and utility. It was considered a new business opportunity in the connector market in 2010.

The FPC/FFC connector has a compact size and utility, making it essential in office and home appliances. With the continuous upgrade of electronic products, the increasing application of LCD has given rise to FPC/FFC connector applications. Especially in the cellphone industry, the FPC connector and board-to-board connector technology primarily determines the quality of a cellphone. FPC/FFC connector application has significantly expanded to meter, automobile, medical equipment, and military supply; thus creating another opportunity for the connector market. With the new FPC/FFC connector application, the growth rate is expected to reach 8-10% annually, portending a promising future.

Improving high speed transmission is important. The continued growth in 3G and WLAN communication has led to the fast development of high speed connectors. In fact, communication has remained the major consumer target for connectors. In order to stay in the communication market, there is a need to significantly improve the quality of high speed connectors. For example, speed has grown from 0.1Gbps to 20Gbps. Both Molex and TE Connectivity have enhanced the development of their respective high speed connectors to increase market share and profit.
